In 2022, the Upper Myakka Lake Weir at the outflow into the river was removed and a by-pass channel (created in 1974) was filled in.  Technical assistance was provided by DOI US Fish and Wildlife Service.
This project removed a deteriorating weir structure, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, to restore the natural flow of the Myakka River, allowing for more seasonal water level fluctuations and improving wildlife habitat.  Restoration efforts commenced to re-vegetate the newly reformed floodplain marsh.
