Wild and Scenic River designation is the U.S.’s strongest river protection tool.
The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System was created by Congress in 1968 to preserve certain rivers with outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values in a free-flowing condition for the enjoyment of present and future generations.  The Wild and Scenic Rivers Act currently protects more than 13,400 miles of rivers and streams in the U.S.
Partnership Wild and Scenic Rivers (PWSRs) are Wild and Scenic Rivers that flow primarily through nonfederal lands.  Management of PWSRs is locally led and driven by municipalities, state agencies, non-profits, and land managers.  There are currently only 18 Partnership Wild and Scenic Rivers in the U.S.
With all models of WSRs, designation aims to protect and enhance river values, such as free-flow, water quality, biodiversity, cultural resources, and more.  PWSR management is targeted at protecting and enhancing specific previously identified river values, with a management plan created by local stakeholders who tailor the plan to the communities’ values and needs.
Partnership Wild and Scenic designation would maintain the Myakka River's free-flowing state without changing existing land use authority at local or state levels.
Inclusion in the Partnership Wild and Scenic Rivers Program will greatly benefit Sarasota County as a result of additional prestige, economical benefits, annual allocations as appropriated by Congress, preferential access to grants, a suite of National Park Service programs and associated technical assistance and inclusion in a collaborative national network of Wild and Scenic river professionals.
This important designation will therefore empower our community to not only continue to protect but also enhance our beloved Myakka River and its watershed, to the benefit of current and future generations.
